Heavy Rain Halts Play

The first day of the second and final Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was entirely washed out due to heavy rainfall on Friday. The overnight downpour delayed the toss, and after continued monsoon rains, the umpires called off play for the day shortly after midday.

Official Statement from PCB

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the situation, stating, “The first day’s play has been called off due to persistent rain and a wet outfield.” Both teams remained at their hotel, and ground inspections were postponed until the rain stopped. The weather forecast predicted intermittent rains, increasing the likelihood of further delays.

Pakistan’s Challenge to Level the Series

The rainout is a setback for Pakistan, who are eager to level the series after losing the first Test. Bangladesh secured a historic 10-wicket victory in the opening match, marking their first-ever Test win against Pakistan in 14 attempts.

Squad Update: Shaheen Afridi’s Absence

Pakistan’s squad for the second Test saw the absence of pace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who was given time off to spend with his newborn son. Led by Shan Masood, Pakistan faces significant pressure to deliver, especially after their unexpected defeat in the first Test.

Coaching Insights: A Call for Discipline

Pakistan’s red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie, emphasized the importance of discipline in the upcoming matches. “Our over rates were very poor in the first Test, and that is unacceptable,” Gillespie stated. He stressed the need for bowlers to maintain a consistent line and length to take all 20 wickets necessary for a victory.

Bangladesh’s Confidence After Historic Win

Bangladesh’s head coach, Chandika Hathurusinghe, expressed confidence in his team’s ability to replicate their success from the first Test. “Beating Pakistan in Pakistan is no easy task, but the morale of our players is very high,” Hathurusinghe said. Despite the victory, he acknowledged the challenges that lie ahead in the second Test.
