Jaya Bachchan’s Response to Name Usage

Jaya Bachchan, the veteran Bollywood actress and Indian Member of Parliament, has addressed her frustration over being referred to by her husband Amitabh Bachchan’s name in Parliament. During a recent Rajya Sabha session, she was introduced as “Shrimati Jaya Amitabh Bachchan.” In response, Jaya pointedly remarked, “Thank you, sir. You do know what Amitabh means, right?”

Chairperson’s Suggestion

The Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha suggested that Jaya consider officially changing her name on election certificates and Rajya Sabha records, referring to his own experience in 1989 as an example.

Jaya Bachchan’s Stand

Jaya Bachchan responded firmly, stating, “I take pride in my own name and also in Amitabh Bachchan. I appreciate all his achievements. However, I am very happy with my name. Male members of Parliament should also consider using their wives’ names alongside theirs.”

Previous Statements

This isn’t the first time Jaya Bachchan has voiced her concerns about being associated with her husband’s name. Last week, she also addressed this issue in the Rajya Sabha, emphasizing her identity as an independent individual.
