An Israeli airstrike on a displaced persons camp in Gaza resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals, including the Hamas police chief and his deputy. The attack, which took place at the al-Mawasi camp, also claimed the lives of three children and two women. Hamas condemned the attack as an “assassination” and stated that the victims were performing humanitarian duties.
Israel’s military confirmed targeting Hussam Shahwan, a Hamas official accused of assisting in terrorist operations against Israeli forces. While Israeli officials stated that they took steps to minimize civilian harm, human rights activists have raised concerns over the humanitarian impact of such strikes.
Among the victims were three brothers, aged 7, 11, and 13, who were killed while they were asleep in their tents. The deaths sparked outrage, with local residents sharing emotional images of the victims being transported to a nearby hospital.
Further Israeli airstrikes on Gaza have caused additional casualties. At least 19 people were killed in Jabalia and Shati refugee camp. In addition, flooding caused by heavy rains has left thousands of displaced families stranded in squalid conditions in Gaza’s makeshift camps, with sewage contaminating living spaces.
This escalation comes after Hamas’s attack on southern Israel, which killed over 1,200 people and marked the beginning of an ongoing conflict that has left more than 45,580 dead in Gaza.
