Initiative Merges Civic Service with Youth-Led Community Problem-Solving
In a major drive to foster grass-roots problem-solving among young innovators, Union Education Minister Pralhad Joshi unveiled the official portal and platform for the Seva First Innovation Challenge (SFIC) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. Organized jointly by the Ministry of Education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the University Grants Commission (UGC), the national initiative establishes IISc Bengaluru as the zonal nodal institution responsible for technical evaluations, mentorship, and pilot deployment frameworks.
Addressing students, faculty members, start-up founders, and industry representatives, Minister Joshi emphasized that true innovation must combine technical excellence with the ethos of Seva (selfless service) to address real-world socio-economic hurdles in alignment with the Viksit Bharat@2047 vision.

Tiered Structure and Geographic Coverage
The innovation challenge brings together young minds across five southern states (Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana) and three Union Territories (Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep). To ensure balanced competition, the SFIC categorizes participants into three specific tracks:
Junior Level: Designed for school students from Classes 6 through 12 to identify hyper-local civic and environmental issues.
Technical Level: Tailored for students at Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) and polytechnics focusing on hands-on engineering, low-cost fabrication, and process fixes.
Open Level: Focused on undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral researchers developing functional prototypes, hardware pilots, or software models with viable implementation pathways.
Five Core Themes and Industry Incubation Protocols
The challenge focuses on five core national priorities: Clean and Sustainable Bharat, Prosperous Farmers, Healthy and Inclusive Bharat, Educated and Skilled Bharat, and Secure Bharat.
Selected finalists will receive direct support including academic and industry mentorship, access to advanced testing laboratories, seed funding, intellectual property guidance, and field-testing opportunities across public sector enterprises, local bodies, and partner ministries. The initiative seeks to transition promising prototypes into scalable solutions that address real-world challenges facing communities across the country.
